Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Thursday said ties with Indonesia were in “very good shape” after plunging this year when Jakarta executed two Australians, hailing her relationship with “text buddy” counterpart Retno Marsudi.



The Indonesian government announced the move to cut visa fees for Australia and 46 other countries on Wednesday, to take effect in October, as the country strives to attract more tourists following significant economic downturn. The execution was followed by a number of other developments like Australia’s decision to turn back migrant boats and slashing down live cattle import from Australia by Indonesia.

Mr Abbott said he is expecting to meet with the Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the numerous summits that are about take place in the coming months.

“Occasionally there are ups and downs, but certainly under this government, there will be no gratuitous offence given”, Mr Abbott said in Melbourne on Thursday.

Indonesia is making it easier for Aussie tourists to holiday on their shores, with plans to add Australians to it’s Visa free entry list.

There are now 92 countries granted visa free access to Bali.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is confident there is scope for Australia to be Indonesia’s “trusted partner” despite recent bilateral niggles.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop ruled out changing Australia’s no-exemption policy for tourists from any country following a breakfast meeting with her Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi in Sydney.

Rizal explained that the government had set up criteria for countries that could enjoy visa-free entry into Indonesia.

Rizal said that his ministry would coordinate with the directorate general of immigration at the Law and Human Rights Ministry to enforce the new policy.

Ms Bishop will visit Indonesia in October.

Trade Minister Andrew Robb is expected to lead a business mission to Indonesia soon.
