20K walk gets action underway on Day 2 at worlds

A Chinese official gestures as eventual gold medallist Spain’s Miguel Angel Lopez competes in the men’s 20k race walk final at the World Athletics Championships at the in Beijing, Sunday, August 23, 2015. Looks like lots of folks.

Bolt kept on powering along in celebration, and when he returned, Gatlin gave him a warm hug. He’s just running that fast these days.

He just didn’t win as convincingly as Gatlin.

“I think I hit my foot too hard”, Bolt said.

But the local organizing committee took steps to improve air quality during the world championships by cutting down on pollution from nearby factories and limiting the amount of cars on the road in the lead-up to the competition. And he still finished in 9.77 seconds, a time Bolt has not come close to this year. “Because we know Justin will be prepared”.

As much as Bolt’s race was chaotic, Gatlin’s heat was sheer perfection – fast out of the blocks, great acceleration and a lightning fast pumping stride before he started coasting. Bolt is that fun-loving sprinter, who draws his share of the spotlight for his theatrics after a win.

Gatlin has been a controversial figure in the sport since his return from a four-year doping ban in 2010.

“No one has to talk disrespectful to anybody”, Gatlin said. Hopefully, my actions on the track will show that, to the people that really care. Asafa Powell, perhaps? Or maybe Tyson Gay?

Don’t count out Churandy Martina of the Netherlands, either.

“Got to be there so I can take that bone when the other two dogs are fighting for it”, Martina said, smiling.

Ennis-Hill was off her high marks from the 2012 London Games but finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump for 2,192 points, an edge of 30 points over Johnson-Thompson. American teammates Tori Bowie and English Gardner could be Fraser-Pryce’s biggest threats, along with Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria.

China and Japan are aiming to capitalize on the absence of athletes from Russian Federation, where the race walking program is under heavy scrutiny amid a doping scandal. The last three events will be Sunday.

Even though Wang had been undefeated for a year, he entered the Bird’s Nest when Lopez was already moving toward the finish line celebrating a gold medal to add to his European title from last year. They’re the only ones to throw more than 22 meters this season.
