Speaking Romanian and Russian, protesters in Chisinau, the capital, on Sunday demanded the resignation of the president, the general prosecutor, the national bank governor and others.

The money is an estimated 1.32 billion euros that disappeared from three Moldovan banks, bailed out with public funds.

The most recent wave of protests brought around 35,000 protesters to Chisinau last week, marking an even larger turnout than the 2009 demonstrations that led to the fall of the Communist government.

They argue that their living standards have been damaged by the fraud.

Privately-owned news channel Publika TV said clashes between supporters of the Dignity and Justice civic platform and a group advocating Moldova’s unification with Romania broke out soon after the rally began. A May audit by financial investigation firm Kroll reported that a chain of complex transactions by a network of companies and individuals tied to Ilan Shor, a 28-year-old businessman, contributed to the financial hemorrhage. The protest still continued in one of Europe’s poorest nations, which has been mired in political instability since a parliamentary election in November. A few hundred protesters remain camped out in the square.

Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova signed an association agreement taking it closer to European Union membership past year, despite opposition from Moscow.
